In October 2001 the staff of the school decided to embark upon what is known as the Green schools campaign as a result of which it and assessment by An Taisce and Galway county council is positive, the prestigious green flag is awarded to the school, A committee of thirteen, comprising ten pupils and three teachers , was elected early on , and these lead the way throughout the campaign. The main force of the campaign is on reducing the amount of waste being sent to landfill reusing as much material as possible, and recycling whatever is suitable. An action plan was drawn up and four green schools teams were selected, who had specific duties to carry out on a rota basis. Throughout the campaign, we were guided by Sinéad Ní Mhainnín, Environmental Education Officer with Galway County Council, who paid a number of visits to the school. A big part of the venture was the production of our Formal Application Presentation, in the preparation of which much teamwork was evident. Obviously, the reduction, and eventually the elimination of litter, was a central aim throughout, and towards the end the anti litter slogan competition and an anti litter art competition were held. Also featured in our campaign were various surveys, a healthy eating campaign, a Green School Open Day and the completion of a Green School Trail. What has illustrated the success of the effort most strikingly, is the dramatic reduction in the amount of waste now being sent to landfill from the school.
The Green Flag now flies above our school, an achievement which is a source of great pride to our school and to our community.
