The first stage of the process is to select the type of wood that you want for your carving,  having done this the second stage is to transfer the drawing to the wood.  This is done with carbon paper. You place the carbon paper down on the piece of timber that you have selected, and then you place the drawing of the carving that you selected on top of this.  You then draw the outline with a pencil. When this is done you remove both the drawing and the carbon paper from the piece of timber, you now should have the drawing transferred to the piece of timber that you are using.
