GRAPHIC COMMUNICATION

'A picture is worth a thousand words'. Humans have been communicating their ideas to each other for huncreds of thousands of years by representing them in drawings. Artists try to communicate some of their feelings and understanding of life through art.

Technologists need a way to communicate their ideas very precisely. Drawing out your ideas allows you to get a lot of information down in a small space, and using measurements allows you to be exact about sizes.

The main difficulty with drawing on paper is that the sheet of paper is 'flat' whereas your project is not! Graphic communication is about finding ways around this problem and others by using conventional methods. The two conventional methods of drawing that this section looks at are 'isometric' and 'orthographic' drawing. These methods use special techniques which is why this kind of drawing is sometimes called 'technical drawing' or 'technical graphics'

The most natural way to draw is to sketch. The rules of sketching are not rigid. Also, there are ways to improve your sketching ability.

As in woodwork skills, drawing requires that you practise. You are unlikely to become a great draughtsperson overnight.
