Common wood-boring insects

 FURNITURE

BEETLE

This is a common pest in domestic houses. It is refered to as 'woodworm'. It attacks both hardwood and softwood, especially the sapwood.

DEATH WATCH

 Not very common. It attacks the ends of damp timbers especially.

POWDER POST

It mostly attacks the sapwood of hardwoods especially during and just after the seasoning process.

WOOD-BORING

WEEVIL

Almost as common as the furniture beetle. It only attacks timber affected by rot or fungus.

HOUSE LONGHORN

BEETLE

This is a very large beetle (about 15-20 mm). It attacks on softwoods and does a lot of damage within 4-7 years.

MARINE

BORERS

 Marine borers atack wood that is submerged in seawater. The 'shipworm' and the 'gribble' are the two most common types.
