Laminating

Laminating requires the use of thin strips or laths of wood called laminates. These laminates can be forced to bend into a particular shape using a formwork and held in that shape by strong glue.

The first stage in the process is to choose good quality, clear timber. Poor quality timber is more likely to split or crack and will not give as good a result.

Next the laminates must be cut to width, length and thickness. Usually laminates are only a few millimetres in thickness, however the thickness really depends on how much the laminates will be bent. For slight bends the thickness may increase. For tight bends the laminates will need to be as thin as possible, 2 - 3 millimetres.

The laminates are cut on the table saw and then fed through the thicknesser to ensure they are smooth-faced and of equal thickness.
