Inspection Car No. 5 (5ft 3in Gauge)
Built by the Drewry Car Co. Ltd., Burton-on-Trent Works,  London in 1927
Builders No. 1495

This inspection car was in use with CIE in the Cork area until the mid 1960s. In 1969 it was purchased by the Irish Steam Preservation Society (ISPS) at Stradbally, Co. Laois. Purchased from the ISPS in March 1983 and removed to Enniskeane, Co. Cork on the 6/8/84. moved to Mallow station (Great Southern Railway Preservation Society depot) on the 21/9/85 and then to Cahir Railway Museum in late 1989. Transferred to Dromod on 18/1/93.
While at Mallow the original Model A Ford 20 hp petrol engine, which was beyond repair, was removed while at Cahir and the bodywork was dismantled and put into store. Some time after arriving in Dromod, No. 5 was sent to Alan Keef Ltd. to have its underframe restored and to be regauged from 5ft 3in to 3ft. It has now returned to Dromod and is awaiting the re-fitting of its body.
The Co. Donegal Railways Joint Commitee, pioneers of much in the field of railcar development, purchased a 5ft 3in passenger carrying Drewry from the Hammond Lane Company in 1934. This had originated on the Dublin and Blessington Tramway and was purchased for scrap when that concern closed down in 1932. After arrival at the Co. Donegal's Stranorlar workshops it was easily regauged to 3ft by putting the wheels inside the the journals instead of the oustside. The railcar ran successfully for a number of years before being converted into an unpowered trailer in 1944. It survived the closure of the Co. Donegal in 1959 and now resides in the Transport Gallery of the Ulster Folk & Transport Museum at Cultra, Co. Down.
