"Through the Plasticity of Metal"
This year, 2010, the workshop titles are of a general nature, The Silversmithing workshops will cover most of the Silversmithing techniques, excluding hot forging of spoons.
There will be seperate workshops for Celtic Chasing and for Anticlastic Raising

The main focus of the Silversmithing workshop is to give students a thorough understanding of how metal can be stretched and compressed.( see illustration below) This is achieved by Raising and Sinking two Hemispheres from th same size disc. The result is quite incredible as one gets from the "Raising" a smaller appearently heavier Hemisphere and from the "Sinking" one gets a larger aparently lighter hemisphere. It is being able to control these two properties of the metal, that enable us to produce vessels of hollow form both "raised and sunk" and to persue techniques like Forging, Chasing, and Anticlastic Raising.

MATERIALS REQUIRED

Silversmithing techniques....2 X 150 mm squares of 1.5mm copper sheet.

Celtic Chasing....130 mm X 130 mm x .8mm thick copper squares X 2
Anticlastic Raising....300 mm X 150 mm X .5mm & 100 mm X 100 mm X .8 mm copper, brass or bronze sheet

Students may also bring those amounts in silver if they wish to work in silver. 1mm (18g) copper in 12" squares will be for sale at the workshop.
