
Sligo has one of the
country's highest levels of participation in third level education. Of the
young people of school leaving age in County Sligo in 1996, 52.5% go on to third
level education. This is the fourth highest nationally.
Primary level: There are 78 national schools in the county with a total of 8,000 pupils.
Second level: There are 16 second level schools in County Sligo, of which 9 are secondary and 7 are vocational schools. There are 4,500 students enrolled in the secondary schools and 1,000 in the vocational schools.
Third level:
The county has a Institute of Technology in Sligo town, which runs courses in the following subjects:
Business Studies,
Computing,
Applied Social Studies,
Engineering (Civil),
Quality Assurance,
Environmental Science & Technology,
Environmental Chemistry,
European BSc in Environmental Engineering Science,
Occupational Safety & Health.
Many of the above courses lead on to post-graduate studies either within the college or as part of a distance-learning programme (e.g. MSc in Environmental Protection).
The IT also runs National Certificate and National Diploma courses in the schools of Business & Humanities, Engineering and Science.
The present student population is 2,500 full time and 600 part time. This is set to rise to 3,000 by the year 2002 (according to the steering Committee of the Higher Education Authority)

St. Angela's College, Sligo.
St. Angela's College is situated on the banks of Lough Gill and offers Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programmes in Social and Community Studies in conjunction with NUI Galway, and an MA with the University of Wales, as well as a B.Ed in Home Economics. Over 300 students attend these programmes from the North West region. The College is funded by the Dept. of Education, they also have 137 full time student nurses. They also run programmes for remidial teachers for primary schools.
