Drumcliffe is the site of a monastic settlement, and also the burial place of the famous Irish poet W.B. Yeats. Its importance dates from 574AD when St Colmcille (also called Columba) founded a monastery here. Judging from the numerous references to Drumcliffe in the ancient Annals, the monastery was a celebrated place and reached its peak in the 13th. Century. The principle visible remains of the monument are the remains of Sligo's only bell tower, a high cross and a fragment of a plain high cross.
The tapestry depicts the 18th. Century church built on the site surrounded by a beautiful stand of mature deciduous trees. In the background to the left stands the mountain of Ben Bulben while to the left can be seen the beginning of the beautiful Glencar valley. Both of these locations figure in the poems of William Butler Yeats whose work still draws visitors and students of Literature from all over the world especially to the Yeats Summer School. Yeats is buried near the entrance to the church and on the headstone his own words

Cast a cold eye
On life, on death
Horseman, pass by!
