Book Description
Thai massage is an increasingly popular healing modality,
and many American and European massage schools offer at
least introductory, if not more, courses to their
students these days. Drawing from Thai history, cultural
studies, Buddhist religion, and yogic practices, as well
as a modern understanding of anatomy and physiology, this
book finally bridges the gap between the theory and
practice of Thai massage.
This book is unique, in that it presents this form of
bodywork as it is understood in Thailandas a
therapeutic medical science. For the first time, the
history, spiritual traditions, and ethical codes of Thai
medicine are presented in full alongside the most
detailed analysis of each particular step in the Thai
massage routine. Examples of therapeutic routines to
treat specific disorders are discussed; a complete
section is dedicated on the main energy meridians and
diagrams of acupressure points.
This book is written in an engaging, informal style, with
numerous photographs and diagrams that illustrate the
techniques used.
About the Author
C. Pierce Salguero is a nationally accredited teacher of
traditional Thai massage and herbal medicine and a member
of the Shivagokomarpaj Institute (Thailands most
prestigious massage school), the Association of Northern
Thai Medicine, the American Herbalists Guild, and the
Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals. His
institution, the Tao Mountain School of Traditional Thai
Massage and Herbal Medicine, offers courses in the
Shivago Lineage of Thai Massage. He also teaches Thai
massage at the Virginia School of Massage in
Charlottesville, VA, the Baltimore School of Massage, and
at the BSMs satellite campus in York, PA.

Book Description
A uniquely relaxing yet energizing way to achieve balance
and healing.
Traditional Thai massage is a dynamic yet comparatively
little-known form of bodywork that combines elements of
acupressure, stretching, reflexology, the application of
herbal compresses, prayer, and meditation. This therapy
has benefits for anyone-young or old, active or inactive,
healthy or not. Sometimes called "lazy man's yoga,"
it stretches the muscles, increases the joints' range of
motion, and balances the flow of energy throughout the
body to promote healing and well-being.
Thai Massage provides fully illustrated, step-by-step
instructions that enable the reader to use this
integrative and interactive therapy (with a partner) at
home. It also explains the history and philosophy behind
the techniques and discusses their connections with
Buddhist thought and practice, yoga, Ayurveda, the body's
energy lines, and acupressure. It is a complete guide to
an ancient practice that benefits body, mind, and spirit.

Book Description
This is an illustrated guide to a powerful ancient
massage therapy, combining breathwork, acupressure,
gentle stretching and applied yoga to promote physical
and spiritual health and well-being. From Thai origins,
and with Indian influences, Thai yoga massage unites the
therapeutic physical benefits of massage with the
spiritual aspects of meditation and yoga. It is based on
the philosophy of an energy line system in our body
through which our life force (prana) flows. Blockages in
this life force can cause aches, pain and disease on a
physical, emotional and spiritual level. This book
explains the background to this increasingly popular
therapy and leads the reader through a session - from
using chanting and visualization in preparing to give or
receive a massage to step-by-step instructions on all the
important massage techniques and postures. The author,
Kira Balaskas, learnt Thai yoga massage in a hill tribe
village in northern Thailand and then practiced in an
ashram at the foot of the Himalayas.
A Reader Review
A great resource for Thai Massage Therapists,

I first saw Kira demonstrate majority of the Thai Massage
moves in Asokananda's advanced Thai Massage Book years
ago (I use Asokananda's book extensively as reference!),
and I am so happy to see her publish her own book. It is
well laid out, excellently photographed, and described.
She goes through a basic routine, describing the moves
and she also has the actual charts for the sen lines and
chakras as illustrated by Kam Thye Chow, who worked
alongside Asokananda, and who has his own excellent Thai-Yoga
book, which I also highly recommend!

quality ph0tos, clear anatomical descriptions, solid
presenta, June 28, 1999
Reviewer: baraksa@netvision.net.il from
Tel Aviv, Israel
This is a quality book that is a good introduction to the
marvelous field of Thai Massage. The photos are clear and
the descriptions of technique are competent. There are
aspects that are lacking though that are extremely well
covered in another book entitled, 'Thai Massage: A
Traditional Medical Technique'by Dr. Richard Gold and
published by Churchill Livingstone. This book presents
Thai Massage as a primary component of an entire
traditional medical system. The theories and history of
Thai Medicine are covered and the development of the
medicine in the context of Buddhist culture is very well
presented. This book also has excellent photos and clear
and easy to follow descriptions. Thai Massage is a unique
style of bodywork that will see rapid growth in the West
as it becomes better known. These books will certainly
help that growth.
A Great Book,

Reviewer: Joel Sheposh (sheposh@uswest.net)
from Scottsdale, AZ
Dr. Gold, in his book on traditional Thai Massage, has
given the massage community hands-on guidance in the use
of Thai Massage. This is more than a step-by-step
workbook on Thai Massage. Yes, it has clear and rich
photography and esay-to-follow instructions. It also
includes the theory of Thai medicine, indications and
contraindications, and a discussion of the sen (energy
pathway). This book should be required reading for anyone
wishing to deepen their understanding of Thai Massage.
