It's Christmas Eve at 1pm, stonking hot..We are currently in the Gili Islands and I do believe we have found paradise. This place beats all we have seen of islands up to now for sheer remoteness and simplicity. From the second we stepped off the boat,we chilled. We are staying in a beach hut on Gili Meno, the smallest and most sparsely populated of the three islands. The electricity comes on at 6pm and goes off at 9pm when we are provided with an oil lamp for the rest of the night..Wonderful! The fresh water for showers is shipped over in huge barrels from the nearby island of Lombok and the restaurant regularly runs out of supplies,so invariably they tell YOU what you are going to eat for dinner! As I type this we are on the largest of the 3,Gili Trawangan, where there are net facilities, more restaurants, clubs etc..and of course..more *****$#! tourists! We are very content on our little isle. We aim to catch a boat over here tomorrow evening (Christmas Day) for the festivities. We are currently trying to find a restaurant that serves turkey..some offer a scrumptious xmas din din but unfortunately we are too late to get a table in most..might just have to resort to Lobster instead..."Oh..no.." Bummer. We are off back to Meno now for a spot of Xmas Eve snorkling over the coral. The sea is actually turquoise..stunning.Cue scene from Castaway (Oliver Reed, Amanda Donohoe) "Last night we sat out under the brilliant stars, talking about home and all the high jinks, parties, alcohol, chocolates, turkey with gravy, mashed puds (oh my gawd I'm drooling and wilcox has collapsed!) Missing all of you in a bad way now. NOT missing the christmas madness though! |
