Smooth Treadmill Reviews

Smooth Treadmills are very respected in the industry, both from Fitness professionals and from the general public, so much so that they lead on-line Treadmill sales.
While putting together this website, I was actually surprised that none of the seven other Fitness Instructors that collaborated with me had a bad word to say about Smooth Treadmills. Very often they are the brand we will recommend clients to purchase for their home.

Smooth treadmills are mid price range machines priced between $1000-$3100 (with free shipping in the USA). You should expect to pay $1000 upwards if you intend to use your treadmill for serious running, and you want your treadmill to last.

They are a brand that have built a fantastic reputation for great build quality along with excellent reliability, Runners World Magazine placed Smooth treadmills in their Top 10 3 years ago. They gave Smooth top rating for quietness, ranked them in the second place for pace accuracy and stability, and one of the highest ratings for cushioning. Other reviews from Treadmill Doctor ,Monster, and Kiplinger gave equally enthusiastic reports.

Smooth lead the market when it comes to warranties, even the most basic machines come with 5 years and most have 10 years on their motors. They also have a “no argument“ 30 day guarantee on all machines. If you don’t like it-return it.

The only real downside of Smooth Treadmills is the lack of equipment on some of the lower models, but most Smooth clients forgive this in favor of the quality of their machines. Half of the models in the smooth range are customizable , where by adding or subtracting $200- $300 you can add or delete two or three features.

Smooth 5.0P Folding Treadmill

We Like: This Treadmill has been Smooth’s best seller for several years now. For the $999 asking price, it has an 18’’ x 52” belt, huge 2.5 HP motor and 9 preset programs. To top all that off it feels like it will last a life time and with that 10 year warranty it probably will.

We Dislike: Nothing really to dislike about this Smooth Treadmill, Ok if we wanted to be picky we could criticize the slight lack of equipment- such as a heart rate monitor.

Smooth 5.3P Treadmill

We Like: This Smooth Treadmill doesn’t really improve upon the 5.0P, despite the extra $300 they charge for it. It has a bigger deck, it is stronger, and it still has all the Smooth virtues.

We Dislike: We feel that the Smooth 5.0P is basically the same machine and at $300 cheaper the one to go for. This Treadmill doesn’t fold which is a distinct disadvantage

Smooth 7.1 Folding Treadmill

We Like: Again the Smooth 7.1 is very similar to the 5.0P, but it comes more complete with some bells and whistles. You can read your pulse via a heart rate strap without having to hold onto the front grip.
Good Treadmills are heavy and lifting the deck into an upright position can be difficult. This Treadmill comes with a power folding mechanism that allows you to do this at the touch of a button. Click here for a Demo

We Dislike: Just like Smooth 5.0P there is very little to dislike about this Treadmill, but while other brands in this price range have more standard features and equipment but they don’t have Smooth’s overall quality.

Folding: Yes (Power)
Heart Rate: Yes
Maximum Incline: 12Maximum Speed: 10mph
Motor Size: 2.5 hp continuous duty

Smooth 9.1P and 9.1HR Treadmills

We Like: The 9 series Treamdmills from Smooth are a move closer to club class. Upon initial inspection it might not look all that different from the 5.0P, it is a bigger and much heaver machine. It weighs 275 lb compared with the 5.0P weighing 180lb, it does however have the same 2.5 HP motor. This model comes with 15% elevation which can create some very challenging workouts.
The Smooth 9.1 is actually broken into two models: the 9.1P which does not have heart rate control and $200 more expensive 9.1HR which has.

We Dislike: Once again our dislikes are so few that they hardly warrant a mention. One possible improvement would be a higher top speed of 12 mph which can be found on similar priced brands.

Folding: No
Heart Rate: HR model
Maximum Incline: 15%
Maximum Speed: 10mph
Motor Size: 3.0 hp continuous duty
Running Surface: 20"x54"

Smooth 9.2P and 9.2HR Treadmills

We Like: Like the model above, the Smooth 9.2 is available either with or without heart rate control. The Smooth 9.2 is a serious machine for serious runners, it has a huge 3.0 HP motor, 14 preset programs and a good sized belt. With this model we are now in the $2000 price range and there isn’t another Treadmill we can think of that offers so much in terms of build quality and durability.
This is also one Smooth’s configurable Treadmills. You can customize it with an aeropedic belt, stretch frame (20 x 62" running surface), motor options, side rails with integrated speed/incline toggle switches, and Heart Rate Control.

We Dislike: The top speed of 10mph while adequate for most people is a little low for a 3.0 HP motor. Its very important to remember that the bigger a motor is, the longer it will last.

Folding: No
Heart Rate: HR model
Maximum Incline: 15%
Maximum Speed: 10mph
Motor Size: 3.0 hp continuous duty
Running Surface: 20"x56"

Smooth 9.3P and 9.3HR Treadmills

We Like: The 9.3 is the only Smooth Treadmill to come with a lifetime warranty. This warranty covers all parts including frame, electronics and wear parts for a lifetime, but Labor costs are only covered for a period of one year from the date of purchase.
Apart from the warranty and some other minor extra features such as multi user programs, this is a very similar machine to the 9.2.

We Dislike: We feel that compared to the 9.2, this Smooth Treadmill is a little overpriced , compared to many other brands out there retailing for $3000 it is great value. Our advice would be to go for the 9.2 and save yourself $1000.

Folding: No
Heart Rate: HR model
Maximum Incline: 15%
Maximum Speed: 10mph
Motor Size: 3.0 hp continuous duty
Running Surface: 20"x56"
