"MEETS DEATH ON RAILROAD TRACKS.
Depew Man Lives Few Hours Followoing Accident On Lehigh.
Returning from store when life is snuffed out by locomotive - coroner
issues certificate of accidental death.
Returning from the store at 6 o'clock Sun.evening, John STOETZEL,
40 years old, of Ellicott Road, was struck and fatally injured at the Lehigh
Junction in North Depew. The injured man was picked up by the train
crew and taken to the DeGraff Memorial Hospital in North Tonawanda.
He died a few hours later. Cornoner HELWIG of Niagara co., NY issued
a certificate of accidental death. Surviving are 5 sisters and 2
brothers: Mrs. Wm. SUTTELL, Mrs. Wm. BLAIR, Mrs. Myron ZURBRICK,
Mrs. Fred TATES, Mrs. Wm. TATES, Jacob STOETZEL and Peter STOETZEL.
Funeral services were held from the home of his sister, Mrs. Myron ZURBRICK,
33 Lake Avenue, Wed. afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. Paul NEMEACHY of
Batavia officiating. Interment took place at [Lancaster] Rural Cemetery."
[Note: From 1900 census, the STETZEL / STOETZEL family lived on Westwood Rd. in Depew Village. Henry (b. Jul 1852) and Kate (b. Oct 1848) had these children-- Henry (b. Jan 1875), John (b. )ct 1876), Kate (b. Mar 1879), Rose (b. Sep 1879), Sarah (b. Dec 1880), Jacob (b. Feb 1883), Peter (b. Dec 1884), Lena (b. Mar 1889 - Mrs. Myron ZURBRICK), Julia (b. Dec 1890), Barbara (b. 1893).]
