National Open Youths Champion

Ryan Dervan has come of age in the boxing world after winning the welter weight National Open Youths Championships in the National Stadium, bridging a thirty year gap for the club. Thirteen boxers weighed in at welter with five Irish champions hoping for glory. In the quarter finals he had a convincing third round stoppage win over Duane Higgins St Pats Newry with the much fancied Anthony Coyle Geesala waiting in the semis. Ryan met the challenge head on and after three bruising rounds the scores were even 2 - 2 with Ryan getting the nod on a computer countback score of 6 - 5. The final was an even bigger challenge against the ultra defensive Christy Joyce from the famed stable of St Michaels Athy. Joyce, a multiple All-Ireland winner, had only conceded on point in his previous three contests in this competition. Ryan boxed him at his own game and at the final bell with the computer unable to seprate them, he won on the judges score of 4 - 1. His coach in the corner was his father Liam, who was the proudest man in the stadium, having seen Ryan get pipped last year by the dreaded computer countback. Hopefully it is the start of great things to come. The bonus for Ryan is a two day training camp this week with the Russian team at the high performance gym in Dublin, with the possibility of a trip to a Russian training camp in the near future.
