Visiting Wales

WalesWe have been in contact with a school in Wales for the past three years. The primary school is a Welsh Medium School , Ysgol Gymraeg Brynsierfel, in Carmarthenshire.

This school is very different to ours. They have thirteen teachers while we have only two. Three of their teachers have visited us and one of our teachers went on a visit to the Welsh Medium School . Unfortunately no children visiting exchange could be organised.

Through internet contact we have learned quite a bit about this country and its people. We set questions for the children of Wales to help them find out about Ireland and they set questions for us about SPORT, MUSIC, ART/CRAFT, HISTORY, CONTEMPORY PEOPLE and A PLACE OF PARTICULAR SIGNIFICANCE.

WHAT DID WE FIND OUT?

Rugby and Singing are the activities that the Welsh achieve well in.

Colin JacksonWe found out that Colin Jackson is a Olympic athlete from Wales and he became a Welsh hero when he won a medal for his country at the Olympics.

Ryan Giggs playing for WalesWe discovered another Welsh hero when we found out that Ryan Giggs is Welsh . Ryan Giggs , a genius soccer player for Manchester United and Wales , is the best left winger and attacking player in the soccer world.

Tom JonesWe learned about Tom Jones and Charlotte Church. They are the most famous singers from Wales .

Aled Jones is another famous Welsh singer. He began to record when he was 12 years of age and his most famous song is “Walking in the Air”.

The local rugby teams for our Welsh partner school is the Llanelli Scarlets. The children support them along with the Welsh Rugby team.

Anuerin Jones is a celebrated Welsh artist. He made the Pennal Mural at Prince Royal Chapel.

St David, Patron Saint of WalesSt. David is the patron saint of Wales . His feast day is a day of national celebration, celebrated there every year on the first of March. He is from the sixth century. His day of celebration keeps many old traditions alive. The girls wear a paisa, a petticoat and an overcoat made of Welsh flannel on this day. The traditional meal is a bowl of leek broth. St. David's very last words were: “I will walk the path that our fathers have trod before us.”
