October: Haute Cuisine:
Once called the Oyster Night, in recent years rebranded as the Taste of
Howth but this year introduced under the new format entitled Haute
Cuisine. Instead of the multiplicity of Howth restaurants taking part,
this year there master chefs demonstrated to the guests their
preparations of each of the courses. A full house attended and
despite much reduced corporate sponsorship
€10,250 was raised for charity.
November: Table Quiz:
The Table Quiz night still attracts a number of devotees, and is
well run (ensuring no iPod/mobile phone use) by an experienced Quiz
Master. Competition was keen
€3500 was raised - a good return but yet some EU500 less
than last year.
December and March: Food Appeal:
This years
food appeal went very successfully this year. Food and
€5,150
donations were generously donated by shoppers in Superquinn, Sutton;
Nolans, Clontarf, and Supervalu, Killester. This allowed the
Club distribute some 200 hampers leading up to Christmas. European
Intervention butter, cheese and rice of high quality was
included in
the hampers, donated by the Government.
April: Charity Concert for Suicide
Awareness:
Together with the newly formed Clontarf and Districts Lions Club
Lions Charity Concert, Howth
Sutton Lions held a concert in Clontarf Castle mainly in aid of
Pieta House and Headstrong, organisations that provide support
services in the prevention of suicide and self-harm in adults and
young people in Ireland. The Garda Band and Dublin Gospel Choir were
the performers. The concert attracted considerable sponsorship and a
a packed house attendance at Clontarf Castle of almost 450 patrons.
AS a result
€10,000 was donated to
these organisations as well as some
€4,000 to other Lions
charities.
May: Bric-a-Brac Stall:
In recent years Howth has
become a popular place attracting large numbers of day trippers at
week-ends via DART, bus and car. Setting up a Bric-a-Brac stall on
one Sunday was a novel fundraiser project for Howth Sutton Lions
Club. While business was never brisk, yet some
€1,020 was
raised.
