Autumn Fund raisers
July:
Walk:
The Lion year started off with a
Lions charity walk under the leadership of Lion Marianne Lehane on July
6, 2014. This first fund
raising event got the Lion year July to June off to a good start. Some
members of the regular (Lions promoted) walking clubs generously took
part. Tea and coffer refreshments were served in the Marine Hotel, Sutton
afterwards. The fundraiser realised €1900 for Howth Sutton Lions
Charities.
November:
Flavour of Italy:
Background: In the 1980s the late Lion Michael Fitzpatrick set up an annual raising event
for Howth Sutton Lions Club charities.
It was a gourmet food night entitled ‘Oyster Night’ in which
oysters and wine was served and took place in Howth Yacht Club. In order
to rejuvenate the event he re-titled it ‘The Taste of Howth’ in the early
2000s. The format of this latter event was that of Howth restaurants
coming together (through the influence and good offices of Aidan
McManus, the famous King Citric Restaurant proprietor) and they freely
provided and served top class food to the patrons. In its heyday to net
takings from the event reached €30,000. This setup came to an end with
the downturn in the economy, Michael’s demise and Aidan being unable to
continue. Part of the format was
the selling of raffle tickets the proceeds of which in the main were donated
to Howth branch of RNLI.
This year’s event: The
club therefore needed to come up with a new idea
for the fund raiser function – this year the event was entitled
‘Flavour of Italy’. On October
10, 2014 a 4-course Italian Dinner was presented by Giuseppe Crupi of
Italian School Cooking and Pinocchio restaurant. Apart from
complementary tickets to sponsors some 100 paying guests attended. A
very good night was had by all those attending.
Overall, expenses came to €5550, although sponsorship was
marginally down and raffle tickets amounted to somewhat less than €3K.
This resulted in a profit of €6,215. From the
event Howth Sutton Lions
presented the RNLI with a cheque for €2,500.
November:
Table Quiz:
The Table Quiz is an important
annual fund raiser for The Howth Sutton Lions Club. This year it was
held as usual in the Marine Hotel, Sutton on November 27, 2014
(Thanksgiving Day in the US). On the retirement of our
long-standing quizmaster, a change of Quizmaster was necessary this
year - former Lion Dermot agreed to step
into the breach.
The number of participants attending the quiz night was up 50% on
last year (albeit then at a ten year low) thanks to the extra effort put
in by club members to entice friends along.
Sponsorship came to €1600, door receipts €1140, raffle €790 plus
donations of €100. Expenses for prizes were €335 (an outright winner,
joint second and joint third prizes (making a total of five quiz
prizes)); thus net outcome was ~€3300.
In the raffle itself the first prize was an impressively made up
hamper (by Lion Briege). Round donors and spot prize donors are to be
thanked for their great generosity to Lions charities.
Sincere thanks to offered to
Quiz Master Dermot - his well-balanced and challenging set of questions
was challenging but nevertheless enjoyable and appreciated by the
participants.
December:
Food Appeal:
The Howth Sutton Lions Club Food
Appeals for the Needy for Christmas were held at various Supermarkets
throughout our area (see background). The first one was held at
Supervalu (formerly Superquinn), Sutton on November 29/30 (Saturday/Sunday),
2014.
This proved to be well
supported by the shop patrons.
The next appeal took place on December 4th at Nolans
Supermarket, Clontarf (while this is a three day event we now share
responsibility with our newly formed sister
club in Clontarf and Districts by manning the checkouts on one day).
This was followed by participation in the national Food Appeal sponsored by
TESCO, our particular supermarkets being Kilbarrack and Shearwater.
Subsequent to the collections,
the food was stored through the generosity of a relation of one of our
members where it was sorted and made ready for packing at the Methodist Hall on
Friday December 19th. Distribution to needy families is
effected through the local conferences of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul.
Upward on 170 Howth Sutton Lions hampers to a total value of
~€1800 are being distributed in this
way (~€2500 collected in money remain
for the spring food distribution).
