THREE KERRY CHRISTMASES BLIGH Talbot-Crosbie, of Ardfert Abbey, in one of his poems in the collection, A Western Wakening, tells us about a Christmas journey made somewhere around the turn of the century, say about 1900. Imagine a wistful country girl, "Lovely Mary Nunan", coming on her ass-cart from the "Christmas Marketing" in Tralee. There she sits "Shadowed in her green plaid shawl". It is a typical Kerry December evening, full of strange and lovely lights that are "On the long road's puddles glinting". A winter sun is setting and Stack's Mountain catches the flame from it. Mary has many lazy miles to go before she reaches home in Templenogue. As she goes she thinks of her day in town. She had bought many a thing: they are all now neat and tidy in her cart: See the white bag plumped with meal, Th' oil drum, and from the sack restraining, next the well-filled market creel, of two geese the white necks craning. See the holly berried-red, and the two big Christmas candles, in the holy eve to shed, soft white beams amid the sand-hills. She remembers too: The gaudy, crowded, tempting shops: The bargain missed, the doubtful purchase, and she is glad to leave it all behind her, content, indeed, to be going home. As it moves towards night and "the world grows fainter, flatter", she looks forward eagerly to many things: to the Christmas Mass, to the bright altar, to the crib and to the holiday homecoming of her family. And still "the asses' hoofs the long miles patter". Imagine now another Christmas, some forty years later. It is Christmas in the village of O'Dorney. Another lovely December day. Lovely light on Stack's Mountain; some cloud shot through with sunshine about Slieve Mish. Most of the village shops have hung decorations - chainey-allies we called them then. We, the village children, travel slowly here and there. We stroll up by the river, cross behind Mossy Whelan's , look in the well, stare at cobwebs that shine in the sun, climb fences, go down to Rice's shed for a game of 'Cowboys and Indians', unknowingly wise to be prodigal of time in that apparently aimless and undemanding world. The day passes and we go home. It grows dark. The air outside is sweet and balmy. I go upstairs and look out: the world is full of candle-glow saffron in every window. Up towards Laccamore the candles shine, west towards Banna and the sea, north towards Killahan, east towards Kilfynn. Candles everywhere! Now it's Christmas morning, and up for the earliest Mass. There are no street lights but candles still flicker in every window, as they have done all night. The whole place is pulsating with a unique sense of exhilaration. There are people walking and on bikes and in traps. The street is thronged with greetings, with Happy Christmases and Many Happy Returns, with people emerging suddenly too, and being wished well a thousand times, a chroi. The old church catches up the barely controlled wildness of the joy. Candles! Candles! Candles! Holly shines on the altar and the choir sings the hymns. We thrill to their singing as much as we might to the singing of some far, famous choir. Home then to Christmas Day, but some of the wonder is already ebbing. There will be special celebrations, of course, but the truly breathing-taking moments, the still clearly remembered moments are, somehow, over. There is still a third Christmas, forty years still further on. The time is now. I know that there are lights in the village and strings of them winking in the windows, and cars blazing and noising in the morning dusk. But is it essentially the same as it used to be? Is there the same wild joy? Do children's hearts still throb with a glorious confusion as they once did? Is there the same warmth in the flood of greeting? Perhaps the greetings aren't even in flood anymore. Does heaven feel as near as it once did on Christmas morning? Or is heaven lost too? Is the magic still there or did youth make its own magic and does memory make it beautiful? Muiris O Riordain (From the book ‘’Abbeydorney Our Own Place’’ 1989) 24/12/2004 Kilflynn Chronicle; The tenth issue of the Kilflynn Chronicle arrived on the Bookshelves just in time for Christmas. Copies are available at Kilflynn P.O.; Cronin’s Bar; Parker’s Bar; Dillanes, Abbeydorney; Abbeydorney P.O.; Galvins, Lixnaw; Stacks Lixnaw. 23/12/2004 Golf Outing; The annual Kilflynn Christmas Golf Outing will take place on Monday 27th in Castlegregory at 9.30.a.m. Everybody welcome. Co. Kerry Hunt will hold an outing in the Kiflynn area on Wednesday 29th December. 22/12/2004
