Foundation in Counselling Skills

Aim:

To teach basic Counselling Skills to those who work with people within a voluntary or professional capacity and who would find Counselling Skills useful.

The course will be built around the model proposed by G.Egan in The Skilled Helper.

Participants will be encouraged to be open to self awareness and personal development and to feedback and share in the learning process with others.

Please note that this counselling skills course does not certify participants to act as trained counsellors.

Course Content: [Subject to change the Tutors will advise]

bulletUnderstanding and acquiring basic counselling and communication skills by observation and practice.
bulletSuch skills include Characteristics of a helping relationship...Styles and techniques of attending and listening...Use of Empathy...Use of Probing ..Use of skills of challenge.
bulletUnderstanding and critically appreciating counselling theories, therapies, approaches, definitions, attributes and principles i.e. Person-Centred Counselling Reality Therapy, Gestalt Counselling.
bulletUnderstanding group facilitation, communication skills and group dynamics.
bulletUnderstanding the role of the counsellor and the role of the client.
bulletUnderstanding the work of various caring agencies.
bulletCounselling in areas such as addiction...adolescence...family bereavement...the grieving process.
bulletPersonal and Emotional Development:To increase self-awareness and the ability to critically reflect on oneself.

Methodology:
The course will be experimental in nature. A workshop format will be used. The emphasis will be on participation, practice of skills and the sharing of ideas and experiences.

The course will include practical demonstrations, exercises, role play, small group discussions and case studies.

Assessment:
The Tutor will clarify the assessment requirements during the session. A satisfactory standard in all requirements is expected:

Essay/Project

Attendance: A minimum of 80% class time participation is required.
Journal: A personal journal is required for the duration of the course.
Audio Tape: An audio cassette of a counselling interview. Transcription of a 10 minute portion of the tape and written commentary with evaluation of counselling skills used.
Assessment: Informal self, peer and Tutor continuous assessment and feedback.
Reading: Reading will be recommended and is required.
Workshop: Attendance is required.
Presentation: A formal presentation is required for the certificate course.

Duration: One academic year - 50 contact hours arranged between participants and tutors.
Certification: Foundation in Counselling Skills
Fee: To be decided.
Enrolment Procedure: Return a completed application form during the first week in September.
Attend an advisory session in the College of Commerce[Tel:021-270777]early Sept..
Attend for interview as advised.
