Gerry O'Hara in his home built KR2 Late in 2001, Hanson Industries closed its manufacturing plant in Sligo, Ireland, my native town. After 35 years as an engineer involved in the design and manufacture of a range of scales, and with ongoing responsibility for plant and machinery, I looked forward to dedicating more leisurely hours to my lifetimes hobby - light aviation. It is over 20 years since I built my KR2, and in the intervening period I have advised and discussed the merits of many different aircraft designs with fellow homebuilding enthusiasts. I resolved to research the latest developments in building light aircraft. Lighter and stronger aircraft built from composite materials seemed to be the way of the future - materials I had become very familiar with in my career with Hanson Industries. Experimenting with materials in my garage, I made molds for models of various shapes and sizes - testing various designs and stresses. A surplus of clock mechanisms lying dormant in a corner prompted me to marry the workings to one of my aircraft models - presented as a gift to a fellow aviator. "Brilliant - have you many more" he enthused. My protests that it was a one off and too labour intensive to produce in volume fell on deaf ears. What I really meant, was that it was a distraction from my determination to build another flying aircraft. I went home and produced other moulds and supplied other clocks to friends. My secret was out!. Local and visiting aviators proved most persuasive. Despite limited production facilities, I have been persuaded to offer a limited number of hand made clocks for sale and I welcome enquiries from aviation enthusiasts and friends from all over the world. And the homebuilding ?. Posponed for the moment. In my "spare" time and at weekends, I continue to train aspiring pilots at my local club.Time flies when you are enjoying yourself !.
