The medieval city that is Kilkenny possesses a rich heritage,
most obvious in its many historical buildings and landmarks,
in particular the renowned Kilkenny Castle which was initially
built by the Normans when they arrived in the 12th century. Initially
established as a monastic settlement in the 6th century, it then
developed as centre of trade and commerce in Norman times.
In more recent times however Kilkenny has forged a reputation
as centre of design, creativity and culture through the establishment
of Kilkenny Design and the successful introduction of a number
of international festivals. |
