Horse and Pony trekking

Allihies has had a strong tradition of horses and ponies probably since the time of the copper mines when horse were used extensively in the mines. There is a horse racing day every 15th of august which is always well attended.

Allihies Riding Centre
is based near the village and in the summer takes out treks.

Walking

The hostel owner is himself a keen walker and will usually be able to direct you on a suitable route. Most weekends he is available to go with you and will show you his favorite routes. [More hillwalking links here..]

Geology

The area is a geologists delight and the evidence of c19 copper mining is abundant in the area. The Irish Mining Society make frequent trips to the area and are actively involved in the Mine Museum which is being created close to the village. More…



 

 

The beach is one of the most popular holiday pastimes and the sandy beach in Allihies is popular but never crowded. Reputedly formed from the minerals washes out from the mine workings it forms a wide flat sandy area a short walk from the village.


Kayaking and Sailing

Local instructor Frank Conroy teaches and lead expeditions around the area. He is a also qualified sailing instructor. Frank will supply sea kayaks and can teach anyone from kids to seniors. He is able to bring kayak and canoes anywhere in the Beara peninsula and enjoys the beach at Allihies as much as anyone!
