The story of Achilles' heel. His mother, holding Achilles by one heel, immersed him in waters to render him invulnerable. This part of his body which escaped immersion resulted in his demise in the Trojan war when he was fatally wounded by a poisened arrow in the heel.

In Chinese culture, womens' feet were once regarded as the ultimate sex symbol. Therefore, to make the feet the most attractive part of the anatomy they were bound to stunt their growth.

The feet are often mentioned in the bible. For example before the Last Supper, Christ washed his diciples' feet. In the parable of the Prodigal Son, he is given new sandals on his return home.
Muslims, Buddhists and Hindus observe the rule not to wear shoes when entering holy places.
