Reflexology as we know it in the west can be traced back to Zone Therapy (Dr William Fitzgerald) at the turn of the 20th century. Other key figures are Dr Edwin Bower and Dr Joseph S. Riley. Zone therapy is considered to be the basis of modern foot reflexology and most reflexologists use it to aid their work. Eunice Ingham (1879-1974) , a therapist of Riley, however is recognized as the founder of foot reflexology. She used zone therapy in her work, concentrating specifically on the feet and developed a map of the human body on the feet.

However, reflexology has more ancient roots, although exactly where and how it developed is unknown. It is certain, however that therapeutic foot massage has been practiced throughout history by a variety of cultures:
