Mizen Head, the most southwesterly point in Ireland, is a beautiful and dramatic place with high cliffs, crashing waves and a romantic path down the 99 Steps to the Mizen Head Signal Station across an Arched Bridge 150' above the sea. The bridge was the first re-enforced concrete bridge in Ireland. Mizzen Head is also the site of the first Transatlantic Radio Aerial. In 1994, when the Commissioners of Irish Lights automated the Station, Mizen Tourism Co-operative developed the Mizen Head Visitor Centre, opening up this exhilarating experience for the public.

In 1854 a cast iron tower was built to replace the Cape Clear Island lighthouse, which was often shrouded in mist. A new tower built from dovetailed granite blocks was built from 1899 - 1904. Converted from vapourised paraffin to electricity 1969. Automated 1989. It has a range of 28 nautical miles. It is known as the Teardrop of Ireland, the last land seen by emigrants to America in the 19th. century.
