"YELLOW GATE WOMEN" DVD by Margaretta DArcy, co producer
Finn Arden
A retrospective study of the Greenham Common Women’s
Peace Camp by a campaigner returning to the scene
of the struggle. It is a quarter of a century
since “Greenham Woman” became a topical
catchphrase synonymous with the militant feminism
of the 1980s; this film shows the reality behind
the cliché, the arduous day-to-day work
carried out by a few dedicated women that has
so often been overlooked in subsequent accounts.
Margaretta D’Arcy took a wealth of video-footage
when staying at Greenham in the ’80s and
’90s; in 2005/6, she revisits the old sites,
the camp, the town of Newbury, the vanished nuclear
base on the common -- she talks to old companions
and local residents -- she sums up the spirit
of Yellow Gate Women as she experienced it then
and as she remembers it today. Her film concludes
with two celebrations, the wedding of Katrina
Howse (longest resident of the camp), and the
launch of Sarah Hipperson’s book about Greenham
in the new commemorative garden that has been
built on the historic campsite.
