Marvelous performances by all our athletes. Many thanks to coaches, Una Raggett and Padraig Kelly, without whose interest and enthusiasm, these fantastic performances would be much more difficult to achieve. The club can be contacted on 086 3951640 or email ballincolligac@eircom.net. Dec 5th - On Sunday December the 4th, the Munster B Cross Country Championships were held in Mungret College Co. Limerick. As usual, Ballincollig A.C. had a dedicated core of athletes taking part. Although a bright, dry day, the weather was bitterly cold and the conditions underfoot were heavy and mucky on a relatively flat course.
What a marvellous day our athletes had. First up was Emma O Neill in the girls under 15 race. Emma, one of our talented athletes, ran very well throughout the race and with 500m to go was in 7th position. She then stepped up a gear, working her way steadily through the field, finding herself in 3rd position with 150m to go. Emma stormed her way to the line, finishing in 1st place to the absolute delight of her coaches Padraig Kelly and Una Ragget. Gold for Ballincollig! Well done Emma and roll on the All-Irelands. Next up was Mark Kelleher. In his first ever cross country event, he ran steadily and finished the race strongly. Great performance Mark and first of many to come. Lauren Crowley and Edel Raggett, fresh from their success in the County Championships a fortnight ago, lined up for the girls under 17 event. Both ran fine races with Lauren running a stormer to reach the line in 6th place and Edel performing admirably in getting the 12th spot. Both won individual Munster medals and a place on the Cork team for the All-Irelands in Athlone after Christmas. Marvellous achievement girls! Last up for Ballincollig was stalwart Katie Fitzgerald in the girls under 19 race. This event was 3000m long. At the half way mark, Katie went into the lead and never lost that position. She crossed the line strongly in 1st place and truly deserved the gold medal that she trained so hard for. Katie has to be a strong contender for a medal position in the National Championships.A proud day for Ballincollig A.C. Maith sibh go leir! Former Ballincollig A.C. athlete Aoife Cooke lines up for Ireland in the European Junior Cross Country Championships in Tillberg, Holland on Sunday. Best of luck to Aoife from all at Ballincollig A.C. who are very proud of her. The
Club are supporting the petition to develop an Astroturf pitch in Colaiste
Choilm. This pitch would be of benefit to the whole community of
Ballincollig, and the club feels it’s a very worthwhile petition. Nov 22nd - November 11th is a historic date in the calendar of Ballincollig Athletic Club. It was on that date 10 years ago that group of dedicated, enthusiastic people met and decided to form Ballincollig A.C. From that day on, the club has established itself, excelling on the County, Munster and All- Ireland stage. On Friday November 11th 2005, the club had its annual A.G.M. in Ballincollig G.A.A club. The committee for 2005/2006 was elected with Eamonn Kelly taking the helm as chairman for the coming year. Maith thú Eamonn agus beir bua! Many thanks to stalwart Eamonn Murphy, our outgoing chairman, and all past and present coaches and committee members who have worked tirelessly and selflessly in bringing the club to where it is today. Following the A.G.M a lively social evening was had by all. Many athletes, past and present attended. Thanks to all concerned for organising this enjoyable event. On Sunday November 13th the County Senior and Junior Cross Country Championships were held in Riverstick. Ballincollig entered a Junior ladies team. Enduring a gruellingly tough hilly course, Katie Fitzgerald ran a marvellous race and finished in 6th place ahead of some formidable rivals. Triona O Neill and Edel Ragget completed the line up. Both ran fine races, attaining 11th and 12th places respectively, ensuring that Ballincollig A.C finished in a credible 3rd place in the team event. Last Sunday, November 20th, Ballincollig A.C. travelled in strength to the County B. Championships in Castletownbere. Athletes performed admirably in all grades. Congratulations to Lauren Crowley who ran a fantastic race and won the gold medal in the Girls Under 17 race. Geraldine Murphy also had a great run and finished in 5th place in the same race. Ballincollig. April 7th - Over the past three weekends, the All Ireland U15-U19 Indoor Track and Field Championships have been taking place in Nenagh. As always at these championships, the standard was extremely high and a few long standing national records were broken. A number of Ballincollig A.C. athletes qualified for the Championships. Emma O Neill gave a great performance in the U15 highjump. It was the first time that a Ballincollig athlete reached a national final in this event. Emma finished an unlucky 4th place after losing out on the silver medal through count back. It was great experience for the young athlete and we have yet to see the best of this talented youngster. Elaine O Leary was the club’s only medal winner at the championships. She recorded a brilliant second place in the U18 triple jump. Elaine has been training hard recently at this difficult event and was very deserving of her silver medal. This is an extremely hard dicipline to learn, and Elaine is a fine ambassador for the club in this event. She also had a good performance in the sprint hurdles. Triona O Neill had a tough run in the U19 400m. This event was particularly competitive with every athlete in the heats recording fast times. Triona, who was not in the best of health on the day, narrowly missed out in a place in the final, finishing 3rd in her heat. Club training is continuing as usual. Anybody interested in joining the club is most welcome to attend a club training session. The club can be contacted on 086 3951640 or email ballincolligac@eircom.net.
