Unit News > New Leaders (Further Information)
Age Profiles of Members
The Unit currently has 4 active training sections, A brief description of theses sections, their activities and the time committment required is outlined below:

Beavers
Beavers are aged between 6 and 8 years old.  They meet every Friday night between 7.30 and 8.30pm.  They have a number of outings during the year, including a fun day, a trip to the pantomime at Christmas and 2 or 3 other activities (normally on a Sunday)

Macaoimh
Macaoimh (Cubs) are aged between 8 and 11 years.  They have a higher time commitment.  There are currnently 2 macaoimh sections, which meet from 7.30 to 9pm on Mondays and Tuesdays. They have approximatley six to eight hikes during the year (September to June) normally on Sundays and at least one weekend away.  Macaoimh are more active than Beavers and can be more challenging.

Scouts
Scouts are aged between 11 and 16 years old and are meet on Thursdays between 7.30 and 9.30pm on Thursday nights.  They have the highest time commitment as they undertake a lot of activities outside their weekly meetings including hillwalks, hikes, weekends away and an annual camp. The scouts section is the traditional image of scouting and are very active.  Scouts are alos more independant and programmes can be more imaginative.  It is not necessary to partake in all activities to become involved in the scout section.

Venturers

Our Venturer section meets to organise activities and is very flexible. The age group is between 16 and 20.  The programme is decide by Venturers themselves and tends to be active but limited to one or two (max) activities per month.  Activities include Hillwalking, Quading, Adventure Centres, Cycling Hikes etc.

What else should I know ?

Scouting at whatever level you choose is very rewarding.  Experienced leaders are in place in all the sections and you will not be left by yourself to run a programme.  Leadership as with all other aspects of scouting is a team effort.

For insurance puirposes leaders must be over 18 and preferably over 21. There is no upper age limit.  You do not have to participate in all activities, but remember as a leader you have input into deciding what activities take place.

Do I Need to know about Scouts ?
No previous involvment in scouting is required as a flexible but formal training programme is run a number of times a year.  These prove very useful particularly as they are aimed at new leaders and are generally very well recevied.

What if I want to know more ?
If your not sure of what is involved, feel free to contact us, without commitment to talk or to answer any queries your may have.  If you want to "test the water" you would be more that welcome to come and see what we do in any of the sections during our weekly meetings on an activity.  Remember YOU can choose the level of commitment you want to give to scouting.
