Sharon Daly and Tracey Buckley, representing Kerry both
from Ballymacelligott Handball Club had a great win on Saturday
16th September in Hospital Co. Limerick.
They defeated Clair Connaughton and Yvonne McHugh of Galway 21/11,
21/14 to take the title. Sharon and Tracey also won the 40
x 20 title earlier this year and it is a great boost for their
Club to have won two minor titles in one year.
All in all our ladies player have won a lot this year for the Club.
Maria Daly and Sandy McSwiney won two All Ireland Juvenile
Titles. The girls Community Games U13 team won the National Finals
in Mosney. They are all a credit to the Club.
Kerry Handball Board ran the Annual Jimmy O Brien Memorial
Shield 60 x 30 Doubles tournament on Sunday 17th September at
Ballymacelligott Handball Club. The tournament is run in memory
of Jimmy O Brien who played his club handball with the Fitzgerald-Jones
Handball Club in Tralee. Jimmy O Brien is best known for his famous
doubles partnership with Paddy Downey. During their reign
at the top they won ten doubles titles while playing together and
between them won 33 All-Ireland medals. Jimmy O Brien created his
own piece of handball history by becoming the first holder of the
All-Ireland Minor Softball Singles title in 1945. Six doubles teams
took part in tournament.
The final was played between Noel Raymond & Pat McCarthy
of Kerry and Michael & Donnacha O Dea of Cork. The Kerry players
won the final game with a score of 21/14, 21/18 to claim the shield
for the year 2000.
