Geographical information from Third Class

My county - Condae An Chabháin

We are in third class and we live in County Cavan in the province of Ulster. As my county is inland it has no coastline. The sea closest to us is the Atlantic at Bundoran or the Irish Sea at Bettystown. The counties which border mine are Meath, Westmeath, Fermanagh, Longford, Leitrim and Monaghan. The main mountains closest to me are the Cuilcagh mountains . My county is a mixture of hills and lowland. These hills are called ‘drumlins’. My county has no coastline it is known as an inland county. The sea closest to us is the Irish sea.

The Annalee river is the nearest main river. The main Town in my county is Cavan. Some other large towns in the county are Cootehill, Kingscourt, Belturbet, Ballyjamesduff, Baileborough Ballinagh, Virginia . Our county car registration letters are CN and used to be ID.

Tourists who come to my county might visit Killykeen forest park, Ballyjamesduff museum, the crystal glass factory, the court house, the Old mill, the lakes, Dunaree forest park, the Shannon pot, the Slieve Russel, the Equestrian centre, and the Shannon Erne water way. There are no cereal crops grown in Cavan. Other types of farming carried on in the county include dairying, suckler rearing, sheep farming, beef , pig and poultry.

Some of the main Industries or factories in my county are Gem Oils, Powels, Boxmore plastics, Gem plastics, Kingspan, Lakeland dairies, Pauwels Traffo and Cavan Crystal. Another interesting fact about my county is it is wet and good for fishing. The Erne river and the Annalee have coarse fish like trout, perch, bream, tench, pike and rudd. A huge 53 pound pike was caught in Lough Gowna some years ago. That’s the same weight as one of us!

In our county we have Lough Ramor, L. Sheelin, L. Sillan, L. Oughter, L. McNean, Gowna, Killeshandra Lakes, Annagh Lake and so many more that make a total of 365. In summer we get swimming lessons there.

In the bronze age the numerous lakes of Breffni provided excellent shelter for the lake dwellings – Crannoga.

The pitch is our favourite place. Some prefer the Swimming pool and Leisure Complex. A few horse lovers prefer the Equestrian Centre at Latt.

The Clan O’Reilly were the rulers of Breffni. Including an area in the present east. The last Clan chieftain was Annadh, who died in 1220.

Another strong Clan were The O’Rourkes, who controlled territory which lies roughly south of Lough Erne. Cavan was one of the counties formed in Ulster, in 1584, by sir John Perrott, Lord-deputy of Ireland, and gets its name from its ancient rulers. The following year it was represented in parliament by two members of the family of O’Reilly.
