Condensation
The light water vapour rises, cools and condenses into tiny droplets which make up a cloud.
There are three basic types of clouds.
1. Cirrus clouds, curly and feather-like, are high up in the sky.
2. Cumulus clouds are big fluffy clouds.
3. Stratus are like a layer in the sky and usually produce a drizzle or light rain.
Can you make a cloud?
Try this experiment.
1. You will need a cold day to carry out this experiment.
2. Open your mouth and blow out a puff of breath into the cold air. Can you see the cloud? It is like a tiny puff of smoke.
Explanation: When warm moist air meets cold air, clouds are made. Your breath is warm and contains water vapour. When your breath meets the cold air, the water vapour turns into tiny droplets of water which form a cloud.
Activity:
1. Look at the clouds each day for a week and record the type of cloud you see mainly each day.
2. Compare your results with your friends' results.
