My branch of the family come from that Great City Liverpool.  My fathers name was Edward Thomas Halligan as was his father.  I have three brothers (to carry on this wonderful name ) and a sister.  The rest of our branch of the clan are all still in Liverpool, my father being the only one to emigrate south to London but now ther are three of us in Lincolnshire, one in Spain and one in Brazil.   Is it just my part of the family or do all Halligans love to joke, tease and generally torment their close friends and family.  I found the other trait is we can really talk and talk about nothing and everything.

Father is Ronald, born in Liverpool to Edward. No-one seems to know when we arrived in England (possibly something dodgy there?). Have spent quite a bit a time time attempting to ascertain where the name 'Halligan' actually comes from. The only interpretation I could find was in a turn of the century book which described it as being an Irish corruption of a Norwegian phrase meaning "Son of the handsome or beautiful one." I don't know if this true, but it made my dad happy. Chris Halligan

Hello my name is Michael J Halligan from Bolton, England. I have just recently started researching my family tree. My father was Michael Joseph Halligan from Gurteen, Co. Sligo. He moved to England in the late 1920's and married my mother Agnes Caulfield in Bolton. My grandmother, Katie Halligan, moved to USA with my father's brother, Luke Halligan, around 1923. They settled in 444East 146th street, Bronx, NY. Luke's last known occupation was a bus driver. We had relations in Nutfield, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway. Their name was Walsh and they owned a small shop. They had a son called John. This is all the information I know.

Hello Brendan,   My name is Jim Brown and I liver in New York State, USA. My great grandfather was Patrick Halligan who left Ireland in and around 1800-1820 for Canada.  I have researched this family but come up against a brick wall when it comes to Ireland. Patrick married Catherine Duggan and they had a son and daughter.  Both born in Ireland.

Hello, I'm Colleen Halligan Zuniga, 59 Fisher Rd, Great Falls, MT 59405;
Any Halligan's with Cleveland Ohio roots, please contact me.  I've connected most of them to my family.  My Halligan line came from Ireland to Canada to Cleveland.  I'm still working in the Cleveland area on the 1860 to 1890 timeframe.  I'm not sure what part of Ireland we're from but I've heard Co Cork and Co Tipperary but I'll figure that out when I get there.  I've also heard the Halligan's were into horses when they were in Canada, but again I'm still in Cleveland.  Thank Colleen....p.s. "The Handsome & the Beautiful" is what I've always heard too....must be correct, when you think about it have you ever seen an ugly Halligan? :-)

My mother is a Halligan.
Born and raised in New Orleans.  The Irish Channel.  Not sure if you have heard of it or not. I really need help with this Surname. From what I see it looks like my great grandfather was the only Halligan in New Orleans in 1890.  His name is/was Peter Halligan.  He married Mary Berrill of New Orleans also Irish.  I can't find any information on him at all.  I only know a few things.  Peter
from what I understand died at sea about 1889/1890.  He left New Orleans and headed for the Panama Canal.  I don't know if he died on his way there or on his way back.  The state of Louisiana doesn't have a death Cert.  Don't know where else to look.  I don't have birth Cert. either.  It looks like he was born about 1854/1855 in Ireland.  Can you offer me any help with this?  Do you how I can obtain a birth Cert.  or a death cert. for him?  I do know his parents name if that would help.

I am living in Flint, MI, I was born and raised here. My family has been here for several generations regrettably the information as of when we arrived here has been lost and forgotten. However, I am interested in my heritage and am always interested in meeting new people whom, possibly or even very remotely I could share a common ancestry with.

I'm marrying into the Halligan Clan, and as I am of Scottish decent I'd
like to include some of my traditions.   However, I'd also like to include
some of the Irish as well, and have been looking to find out if there is a
tartan that is associated with the Halligan Clan.  Any help you can give of
where to find it, or other Irish traditions would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,Margo Irwin

My name is Sean Halligan.
I live in Update NY just outside of Saratoga Springs, known for its water &
horse racing. My claim to fame seems to be the pure luck of being the Grandson of FDNY Deputy Fire Chief Hubert Halligan, inventor of the Halligan Tool & Halligan Hook.  While mine is used mainly for chopping ice, I am told over and over how wonderful a tool it is by firemen.  I even posed with one in Italy once. If you don't kow what the tool looks like - go here:

Hello Ben,     I'm Stephen James Halligan from south-western Pennsylvania and 49 tears old. I saw your web page, and your invite to email you. There is a small clan of Halligans in this area of Pennsylvania. If I pick up a phone book and look up Halligan----- I'm related to all. Also all my kinfolk are die hard Steeler fans. That's a tough nut to crack. LOL        Also, I traced my family ROOTS.........and they go straight to the septic tank. I think 2 brothers stole the church collection and beat it over here to America in about 1870.

Rcline3@Ford.com

I inherit my Irish blood from my grandmothers. Florence Halligan and Gladys Kelley. I know that My great Grand father Daniel Patrick Halligan was born during the trip to America then baptized  at Holy trinity church in Detroit Michigan in 1884. This info came from my grandmother but the church lost every birth record preceding 1911 due to a (wait for it) Fire. Anyway, no I don't need for you to pedal around for me but if you have more info about the Halligans and perhaps a better picture of the coat of arms send it to me if you have the time. You have my return e-mail address attached. or send it to

Dianewicca@aol.com I AM ALSO A HALLIGAN. MY NAME IS DIANE LYNN HALLIGAN. I LIVE IN NEW BRITAIN, CT USA. I LIKE YOUR WEB SITE AND WAS HAPPY TO SEE WE DO HAVE A COAT OF ARMS!

Sir Halligan,
My name is Karl William Halligan, son of Kevin Robert Halligan,
Grandson of Robert Halligan of Michigan. I currently reside in Florida.
I plan on having the family (Halligan) Crest tattooed, but I know of two
different crests that the Family posses. one Crest was researched by
"The Hall of Names Inc.." Certificate # - 953336-12.12-1713  . It also
shows the family colors as red and gold with blue backround. When I get
a new power cord for my scanner, I'll scan and email the picture to you.
But, the question is can you find out if there were other crests in the
family? and which Crest should I get tatted. I am 30 years old with wife
( Terri Teresa Halligan ) Formerly (Martin)  and Son ( Connor William
Halligan ). I too, am in the military. Please feel free to email us at
any time.Karl William Halligan
