THE JUNIOR CERTIFICATE SCHOOL PROGRAMME

The Junior Certificate School Programme is a national programme sponsored by the Department of Education and Science and the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment.

It is based on the concept that all young people are capable of real success in school, and that they can have a positive experience of education. The Programme is a way of working within the Junior Certificate which is specially designed to help young people who have had a difficult experience of school. It will provide students with an opportunity for success with an official record of their achievements, validated by the Department of Education and Science.

The Junior Certificate School Programme does not replace the Junior Certificate, but offers a different approach. All students in the Junior Certificate School Programme follow the Junior Certificate curriculum, however they do not sit as many examination subjects.

Beech Hill College introduced the Junior Certificate School Programme in September 2000. Students involved with the Programme have undertaken wide and varied activities that are aimed at complementing the learning process taking place within the classroom. These activities include visits to local firms and businesses, leisure activities and the construction of a school garden. Links between home and school have been built, with parents forming an integral part of the Programme.

In the academic year 2001-2002, it is hoped to involve more students in the Programme and to build on the successes achieved thus far.
