THE GRAIN CRUSHER

picture of a piece of equipment use to crush the grain for the mash.

This grain crusher is made with two 12 inch by 3inch knurled steel rollers, made by a friend on a lathe, one of the rollers is rotated by hand or with a drill, and the other turns as the grain moves between the two. The rollers are mounted in 4 pieces of brass which are bolted to the wooden base. To adjust the gap it is necessary to loosen the bolts, the whole thing cost me a few bottles of beer. It works well, the knurling (roughness on the rollers) is fine so the grain is very evenly crushed and with a 750 watt drill attached it is damn fast. It is very heavy so it has to be bolted to a bench when in use.
