Catch reports

First trip of the season was booked by Ray Lafferty from Northern Ireland on 8 and 9 April. The fishing was pretty slow but some nice Ballan Wrasse fell for rag worm on a flowing trace and as usual Launce fished live on a flowing trace tempted some good Pollock.

Easter weekend was the turn of Brendan Murphy’s group from Kilkeny. They always take the Easter weekend and have been lucky with weather for many years. 2006 was also good to them and they got 2 days nice weather and some reasonable fishing. Plenty of Pollock, mostly on Launce but red gills and other lures also tempted some good fish. Ballan Wrasse were also in abundance and the effort of digging a few lug was well rewarded

Lovely weather, calm seas and good fishing for Joop Aart's group of Dutch anglers from Clifden aboard .boat Blue Water during last week ending 13th May 06. Joop's group had very many Pollock to 8 lbs and recorded 10 species for their 2 days out. The highlights were Conger to around 30 lbs (which were all returned) but a fine Cod of 11lbs made a very special dinner for the group.

Awfull weather made the fishing conditions aboard Blue Water this weekend 20th May very difficult for Klas Vos and his group of Dutch regulars. In spite of winds gusting up to storm force 10 on the evening the group arrived at Sharamore House they did get the 2 days fishing they were hoping for albeit in the shelter of Cruagh and High Island where they had some good Pollack once again on the live launce. A couple of hours just outside Clifden Bay produced half a dozen nice Thornbacks, the biggest getting in to double figures.

I will be installing a proper live bait tank on Blue Water in the near future as the Sandeels (launce) are proving so successful. It is not always possible to catch them but when they are about the are well worth the trouble.

Blue Water has been based in Cleggan for the last few weeks. The all tide pier is a real luxury and there is great shelter around Inishbofin Island where we have had some good fishing and some interesting species.

Last weekend we had the first Clifden Open Boat competition. It was a species competition fished on the 17 18 and 19 June. Competitors were allowed to bring in one of each species to be weighed provided it was over the minimum size. The first prize was €5000!!!!!.It was won by a visiting angler from Holland, Hans de Shilt with 18 species. Runners up were Irish angler Josie Barret and local man Peter Coyne with 17 species each. The heaviest fish was a Ling caught by local man Josie Flaherty. There were 8 boats fishing and John Brittain’s Blue Water won top boat having most fish as well as heaviest fish. The competition was a great success, everyone had a good time, the Guinness flowed and the fish got bigger and bigger and we are all looking forward to next year when it will be fished on 15 16 and 17 June 2007.

The Inter Bank Sea Angling Competition was held in Clifden on sat 12th August. There were 6 teams of 4 fishing a one day species competition aboard John Ryan's Celtic Queen, Johnnie King's Western Kingfisher, and Jonh Brittain's Blue Water . It was won by the AIB team of Brian Cogan, Bryan Cooper, Jerry O'Connor, and David Keegan, who had 10 species for the day under difficult conditions. Cecil Barron won the individual prize and Brian Cogan was runner up; they were both fishing aboard Blue Water and get a weekend for two staying at The Station House Hotel in Clifden plus a day's fishing aboard Blue Water. This was the sixth year the Inter Bank Competition has been fished in Clifden
