When the materials are decomposing in the bog they produce certain types of nitrogen gases. When these gases meet the oxygen in the air they ignite and produce the dancing will - o' - the -wisp, which helps to make bogs such mysterious places. Long ago, people used to believe that these lights were the fairies dancing in the moonlight.

The word 'Bog' is the Irish word for soft.

A story is told of a bog in Kerry Ireland that ran away.   What actually happened was that it became so ful of water that it began to flow like a river.  In the course of its running, it carried slit from a quarry near Gneeveguilla as far as the lakes of Killarney.  Many houses were knocked down, trees were uprooted and many people were drowned.
