There are two types of peat bogs found in Ireland- blanket bogs and raised bogs

 

Raised Bogs

Blanket Bogs
  • have an average peat - depth of 8 meters
  • occur mainly in the flat Midland areas
  • occur in areas where yearly rainfall is approximately 1000mm
  • have an average peat - depth of 1.5 meters
  • occur mainly in the mountainous West
  • occur in areas where yearly rainfall is approximately 2000mm
