Motor

Motor insurance is compulsory i.e. every car on the road must have cover for the death of or injury to third parties or passengers in the vehicle.  A third party is someone you crash into or injure in some way.  Third party insurance does not cover the driver or any damage to his or her vehicle.

Third Party, Fire and Theft

The motorist may take out third party, fire and theft insurance which protects the insured from loss due to fire or theft as well as protecting third parties.

Fully Comprehensive

Under this policy third parties as well as the driver and his or her vehicle are covered.  Although this level of cover in not compulsory many vehicle owners prefer it but it is more expensive than other forms of motor insurance.

No-claims Bonus

If the insured person does not make a claim during the year, the next premium paid will be reduced by a certain percentage.

Loadings

There is an increase in the premium charged - a loading - if the insurance company considers that certain conditions increase the risk.  Loadings are applied if the driver is under 25 years of age, or the car is over 10 years old, or if the driver lives in an urban area
