farawayan imageFarawayan (1998)
A haunting story told in breathtaking images, emotive soundscapes and physical theatre. Internationally acclaimed writer Donal O'Kelly has invented a moving theatre experience beyond the limitations of language and narrative. Deftly defying word-bound dialogue, FARAWAYAN seductively tells the tale of the experience of being unwelcome far away.

Innovatively devised for a ballroom rather than conventional theatre, this roller-coaster production invents stunning images, powerful music, exotic environments. A pioneering evening of Hitchcock-like spectacle from Donal O'Kelly in his directorial debut.

Féile Fáilte (1997)

A theatrical parade from Temple Bar to the garden of the Civic Offices at Wood Quay in Dublin. We aimed to draw attention to the plight of refugees and to celebrate diversity in Ireland. A larger-than-life sized puppet of the Celtic Tiger, designed and built by Theatre of Fire conveyed the exclusive Ireland prospering at the expense of the less well off and marginalised. At the Civic Offices a dramatic finale included music from different cultures, film, fire-sculptures and firework displays.

Rosie and Starwars (1997)

Written by Charlie O'Neill and directed by Garrett Keogh, Rosie and Starwars was a humorous, bold and tense thriller tale which chronicled two converging stories, each representing two loaded strands of Irish life. Transposed to County Clare during the county's epic run up to winning the All Ireland hurling Final, the play portrays a community exploding in exuberance and celebration while an underbelly of prejudice festers against a Traveller's site just outside of town. Based on a tapestry of true events, this play aimed to promote the social inclusion of Travellers as valued members of our community, and to explore issues of marginalism, identity, social exclusion and racism in Ireland. Rosie and Starwars was staged in a marquee in Meeting House Square in Temple Bar, Dublin and subsequently toured to six venues around the country.
