The Sporting Year 2001-2002.

The school has competed in practically all events open to it. While repeating the wonderful achievement of 2001 was always going to be difficult each boys and girls still gave of their all in their chosen fields. As usual the cross country was held in terrible conditions. Paul Monahan ran a great race in the boys event. High praise is due to Daniel OShaugnessy who represented his school for the first time

In the INTO 7 a side Caragh defeated Allenwood and Prosperous only to lose out to a strong Derrinturn outfit. Mark O’Brien and Mark Power were very effective. Derriturn also had the upper hand over the girls- here Emma Murphy and Natasha Campbell were to the fore. The senior boys did not enjoy much luck in their competition but the experience gained should stand them in good stead for next year. Liam Bissell, Andy Connors, Paddy O’Brien and Michael Byrne gained good experience. The U-10s likewise enjoyed no luck just failing to beat Rathangan and Scoil Uí  Riada. How ever we did see some great performances from Derik Walsh, Gareth Malone and Dean Heavey. At the time of writing the girls play a must win game against Athy. We look forward to a great effort from Laura Doyle, Michelle O’ Drisscoll and the Power twins.

In mid June we hope to have our Fun sports day. We hope that each child will participate in our day.

The annual inter-class league.

The annual inter-class league for boys who did not participate in the inter-school league was held over the last 5 weeks. We had 6 teams of  9 a-side. Shane O’Driscoll, Liam Bissell, Neil Johnson, Daniel Jennings, Michael O’Sullivan and Conor Nolan captained the teams. Each team played a minimum of 7 matches, culminating in the final won by Neil’s team. Well done to all the players, who will next year represent the school.

Sports News.

Bord na Scoile competitions eventually got started on April 3rd. This year our school will participate in a wide range of competitions including Gaelic Games, basketball and cross-country running. Each year sees more and more pupils trying their hand at various activities. This year already Thomas Conlon ( football ) and Thomas Connolly ( athletics ) have represented their school for the first time. Those who don’t participate in inter school activities are catered for with the organisation of inter class pursuits during lunch breaks.

Caragh Vs San Carlo

U 13 Girls

It was a windy day and San Carlo got the fist score, which was a goal. Caragh had excellent defenders with Kate Power, Rachel Caffrey and Sheenagh Dillion kicking the ball up the field. A while later Nicola Leavy kicked the ball to the forwards and Elaine Dunleavy scored a goal. 3 more goals were scored and Frances Smyth scored a goal.

However san Carlo dominated the 2nd half with the score 1-1 to 4-0 with caragh in the lead. Caragh did not score any more but won by one point.

Final score Caragh 4-1

San Carlo 2-6

By Maria Power

Caragh 4-11   Sallins 0-7

Caragh had a shaky start but settled down after a couple of frees from Shane Power. Then Caragh came with a real burst with a couple more points and a goal from Bobby O’ Leary, which came from a great pass from Niall Kelly. At the half-time break, Caragh had a slight advantage even though they were playing against a strong wind.

Caragh started the second half with points from Shane Curran, another opportunist goal from Bobby O’Leary and Marty Lynch also got on the scoresheet after some good passing involving the half-backs and Thomas Conlon who was having his first start for the school. Late on Shane Curran got a goal and half-back Eoin Winders scored a point. Overall it was a good display with stout defending and some excellent scoring.

Caragh team: Daire Conlon, Dara Challoner, Colin Cassidy, Kevin McDonnell, Tomas Nolan, Brian O’Donnell, Eoin Winders (0-1), Shane Power (0-7 4 frees), Niall Rooney, Tony Farrell, Niall Kelly, Shane Curran (1-3), Bobby O’Leary 2-0, Marty Lynch 1-0, Alan Igoe. Subs: Tom Earley, Andrew Earley, Thomas Conlon.

Derrinturn V Caragh

CARAGH 4-8 -DERRINTURN 1-9

The match started off very evenly with chances for either

team. But then Shane Power broke the deadlock with a well

taken free. Then Bobby O Leary got a goal. After that

Derrinturn replied with a point before Alan Igoe got a

Shane Power Shane Curran got in for his 1st of 3 goals.

Following this Marty Lynch got in to put 8 points between

the 2 . After that Derrinturn got 2 quick points before

Shane Power got another point. Then just before half time

Shane Curran got a spill off the keeper and made no

mistakes making the score 3-4 - 0-3.

The second half restarted with a more determined

Derrinturn team taking the field. Caragh found it difficult

to get a score while Derrinturn had no problem getting 4 scores

in a row before Shane Power taking a free and converting. After

that Caragh started to play a little better with some great work

from the youngest man on the field Alan Igoe getting a point. After

that Derrinturn got a point then Shane Power rounded off a fine

performance with his final from 4 points from a free. However Derrinturn

got another point and about 5 minutes later the Caragh goalkeeper Daire

Conlon after having a fine display althrough the second half was beatan.

The job was made alot easier for Caragh with all six of the backs performing

superbly. Then the job was rounded off when Colin Cassidy swung over a superb

45 and Shane Curran emphatically finishing to the back of the net. Some of the

best for Caragh were:- Daire Conlon, Colin Cassidy, Eoin Winders, Niall Rooney
