The
most unique feature of Rahasane is the amazing fact that it contains a crannóg.
Crannógs were
lake dwellings which date from the Bronze Age in Ireland.
However, it is thought that this crannóg was not built until 400-80OA.D.
They are man-made islands of stone, sand and clay with a palisade of oak poles.
Their principal purpose was
for defence both from marauding animals and from enemies.
It may be that this crannóg was used only during winter when the turlough
was in flood. Nearby, the remains
of a ring-fort were discovered. Perhaps this was the summer residence of these
early tribesmen!
