Plastic
Waste is one of the
most difficult waste types to dispose of in an Eco-friendly manner. If you
landfill plastic it takes very long for it to degrade and if it is
incinerated, it gives off toxic substances called dioxins. It is for this
reason, the Government is introducing the plastic
shopping bag levy. From
4th March
2002,
an Environmental levy will be charged at 15 cent per bag on plastic
shopping bags. Every time you
shop you will have to decide whether you need a plastic shopping bag. The retailer must charge you for each bag and this must be
itemised separately on your receipt. The retailer will send this money to the Revenue
Commissioners and it will go into the Environment Fund.
The levy will be payable in all sales outlets e.g. Supermarkets,
Clothes Shops, Book and Record Stores, Service Stations etc.
Carraignabhfear
Environmental Committee recommends the re-use of plastic bags or the use
of paper bags When Shopping. This will help the Environment and help your pocket.

March theme; COMMUNITY
ALERT; I want to pay a special tribute to two people who have been involved in Community Alert since it began inCarraignabhfear
in the 1980’s. Michael
Sherlock and Patsy Murphy have done tremendous work for the Community
and have been involved in a number of initiatives over the years.
In particular I mention the Social Alarm Project for the elderly which they spearheaded a couple of years ago. This scheme, grant aidedby the Department of Social Welfare, saw the instillation of a number of panic button alarms in homes of theelderly in the parish.Unfortunately,
over the past couple of years Community Alert in Carraignabhfear has been
left to a very small Group
and more than not with only Michael and Patsy keeping it going.
I understand that now Michael
and Patsy feel it is time to pass on the reins of Community Alert to some
others. I want to take This opportunity on behalf of An Garda Siochana to thank Michael and Patsy for all they have done. I appeal tothe
community for some new people to take on Community Alert.
Community Alert should be seen more than Just
a crime prevention organisation. It
has a social role in particular with helping and caring for the elderly and
vulnerable. The Department of
Social Welfare continue to annually grand aid projects to help the elderly
through
Community Alert committees and this is another means of getting funding
into the community to look after
the more vulnerable in the community. In
relation to the crime prevention/detection role of Community Alert, I
appeal to all to be aware of what is Going
on in your own areas, to be aware of the elderly, especially those living
alone. You do not have to be
a nosy
neighbour, just a friendly one. Know
the regular comings and goings in your own area.
If you see something
unusual, note it. You do not
have to confront anybody. If
you wish you could pass up and down a few
times. Make the area seem a
busy one. If in doubt, call
the Gardai either via Cobh Garda Station (021)-4811333,
(available 24 hours) or in the case of an emergency
use 999 or 112. If
you wish drop a note into the Garda Station.
If nothing has happened no harm will have been done.
If Something
does happen then your piece of information might be vital and help solve
the crime.
Sgt.
Jim Crotty. The
Community Alert Representatives are; Michael
Collins – Gormlee/Boherard,
Dympna Geaney – Ballinaborta,
Denis Begley - Dunbollogue Renske
Hickey – Ballybrack,
