Questions
Q: What is Star Trek Quest?
Chris: Star Trek Quest (STQ) is an
online Star Trek simulation, played through a messageboard which simulates
the Federation Starship USS Facsimile-A (NCC 72209-A), a Defiant-class
Starship. Players assume the roles of crewmembers on board the ship, posting
messages to describe their actions to other players.
Tommy: To begin, you need to create
a character, then email their profile here.
When you get the all-clear, you can start playing by posting your actions
to the messageboard. You'll be given the link when you join up.
Q: Does it cost anything to join and
play?
Mark: No, it's completely free. Unless
you're Canadian.
Q: Can anyone
join?
Tommy: Yes, anyone
can join. But, basic Star Trek knowledge is required. Unless
you're Estonian.
Q: Can I play
a character of the other gender?
Chris: Yeah!
<chortle>. But do not be using our site as a front for your sexist feelings.
:)
Q: What are the
restrictrions on the characters I can play?
Chris: Basically,
all races aligned/peaceful with the Federation can be played. However,
Romulans and Cardassians cannot be played unless they are with one of the
aligned/peaceful civilisations, and for obvious reasons Borg/Jem'Hadar
and Dominion characters cannot be played. Tommy: You can't play a character
who is a clone of someone from a ST series in all but name.
Q: How much time
do I have to put into STQ?
Tommy: You only
have to go onto the MB a few times a week for 5-10 mins a time and read/post
messages.
Q: What happens if I die?
Tommy: Due to the inordinate amount
of work and love put into any one character, dying is not the end. You
will be revived in sickbay, but will have lost a rank (lowest rank: Ensign).
Skill
Questions
Q: What does something like (Any race)
or (Specific race) mean in the title of a skill? Does that mean my character
has to be that race to use the skill?
Tommy: No. (Specific race) means that
you must choose one race to "specialise in" when you pick the skill.
For example, History (Specific Race) means you must choose a particular
race to study, e.g. History (Klingon) or History (Vulcan). You can choose
the same skill more than once, but pick a different race, so you could
have both the above skills. (Any race) means that picking the skill once
gives a grounding in all "basic races" (e.g. Human, Klingon, Vulcan, Cardassian,
Romulan, Ferengi, Bajoran, Andoran, Bolian etc.)
Q: How do I choose Level 2 or 3 of
a skill?
Tommy: Some skills are graded into
3 levels, each one representing greater proficiency. For example, a character
with Phaser Skills Level 3 is an excellent shot, capable of winning in
the most difficult firefights, whereas every Ensign alive can shoot at
Level 1. The first time you choose a skill, you take Level 1. You can upgrade
it by spending another one of your skill choices on it. So, you could choose
to upgrade to Phaser Skills 2 when you are promoted to Lieutenant JG, and
then to Level 3 when promoted to Lieutenant, or you could choose two different
skills instead.
