Castlemartyr GAA Classic 2001
Main sponsor ORM Kitchens
Castlemartyr GAA held their annual Golf Classic on Thursday 30th August at East Cork Golf Club. This annual event that has become a great social occasion within the club as well a necessary fund raising venture. We were blessed with a glorious day and the course was in excellent condition whatever about some of the players. 47 teams took part and helped make it an enjoyable day.
First place went to our close friends and rivals, Fr O Neills GAA Golf
Society team composed of JJ Joyce, John Hayes, Mick Brett and Maurice Conway.
They had a marvellous score of 15 under (gross) for the scramble event
considering they were still recovering from the previous weekend when their
hurling team had won the Divisional hurling final. Congrats to all the team on a
wonderful score and to Maurice Conway who spoke on behalf of the team.
Second place went to Biocel from Little Island who had the Chairman of the
organising committee, Christy O Sullivan, in the team. Christy acted as M.C. for the
evening in in his usual accomplished manner. He is pictured here recieving his
own trophy for second place from Michael Carroll. Third place went to the
Erin's own stalwart, Michael O Connor's team. Fourth team home was the Morgan
family of Castlemartyr and Cobh, followed in fifth place by New Ireland
Insurance anchored by Seamus Lawton.Ray Hennessy's team won the non-GUI section with a great display from
Midleton man Eamonn Murphy who was getting married the day after. He can play
well under pressure and was ably backed by Tom Kelly, Fergal Brennock and Ray
Hennessy.
Thanks to Maurice and Joan and all the ground staff and catering crew for making the day so enjoyably and creating an atmosphere that cannot be matched anywhere else. Also thanks to the Captain Richard O Riordan and Officers of the Golf Club for turning out to support our day. Thanks to all our sponsors for making it a successful day and to all players who turned up.
Finally thanks to the hard working Organising committee of Christy O Sullivan, Michael Carroll, Seamus Lawton, Charlotte Carroll, John Morgan and Patrick Walsh.
