The male mallard is very colourful.

It has a bottle green head and neck and a soft brown/grey body.

The female is less colourful with a black streaked brown body.

These colours help to camouflage her when she is sitting on her nest among reeds.

Like all dobbling ducks mallard feed by running their beaks through soft mud or upending to take vegetation from the bottom of pools, rivers and lakes.

We captured a male mallard on video as it swam past the school.

Now is a good time to see young mallard ducklings.
