Greenbean Coffee Roasters
Pat Grant, one of only a few professional coffee roasters in Ireland, is profiled in the enterprise network section of the Sunday Times today. One of the areas he wants to improve is the company website which is quite basic at the moment . He's also in the process of building a 1500 square foot complex in Co. Down to train baristas and has many other plans to develop the company, raising its profile throughout the island. A good, in-depth article and considering the amount of coverage The Sunday Times gives to coffee I suspect there's more than one caffeine nut working there!

Whatever happened to
Gloria Jean's?
Ok, I was never very fond of the coffeehouse - the last time I was there I just found the experience poor from start to finish, from the attitude of the staff to the quality of the coffee. Still, it was one of the mainstays in the coffee
arena, and better than Starbuck's. So what's happened to their outlet in Clarendon Street and who are (something) Bay?

Starbuck's opens in Harcourt Street, Dublin
Smaller than expected as it appeared that the outlet
was going to take the entire corner site of a new landmark office
building Starbuck's continues to expand into the Irish coffeeshop
market. Their local competitors were obviously underwhelmed by
the new arrival and a nearby coffeeshop had a notice in the window
urging customers not to get Star*ucked! Coffee_qn attempted to
get a photo of the sign but was too late - the sign only lasted
a day!

Barnie's Irish Franchise
up for sale
Unconfirmed as yet but a
source said today that due to poor turnover Barnie's outlets in
Dublin are now on the market.

Butler's Chocolate Cafés
arrive in Cork
The New Year's Eve special with Ryan Tubridy on RTE 1 featured
a Free Box of Butler's for 'everyone in the audience' to promote
the opening of their first Cork branch, in addition to the seven
outlets in Dublin

Bewley's
closes - then re-opens as Bewley's Café-Deli-Bar...

US East coast chain Barnie's

Starbucks
opens in Dublin in Dundrum Centre and College Green. After a couple
of trips (the Dundrum branch seems particularly busy) I have to
say I'm fairly impressed with them, I like the atmosphere (more
to follow soon)

"Coffee has been enjoyed
since the 9th Century when, according to legend, an Ethiopean
goatherd found his flock frolicking about after munching on coffee
cherries. He sampled a few and was soon gamboling along with his
goats."

As
a lover of all things coffee-related for many years, I have long
wanted to share my interest in 'the bean' with others. A regular
in many of the coffeehouses around Dublin's city centre I also
want to give credit to them (where they deserve it!) and give
others a chance to share their experiences too.
So here's a little website devoted to all things coffee related.
Enjoy...

16/4/06 The Sunday Times reviews 'The Undercover Economist' by Tim Harford (Little, Brown £17.99, pp288), a look at the reasons for a cup of coffee costing so much relative to the cost of the basic bean. Not surprisingly the location of the coffeehouse plays a huge part, but also how much the customer is willing to pay. What is the maximum you, the confirmed caffeine addict, would be willing to pay? Email me and I'll publish the results...
