Mini reviews
These are just tasters for what may come when the full review is posted or, in the case of small outlets that make no claim to
be a coffeehouse, just an indication of the quality of what's on offer.

Studio Bar, Top Floor, Arnott's, Henry Street, Dublin
Pretty awful cappuccino (weak, cool) from what used to be a nice little restaurant. Illy beans are used so they have no excuse. And then, to top it off, I was left €10 short in my change (though I noticed, thankfully). Very unimpressive and not worth a longer review.

Café Paul Rankin, Dundrum Centre
Nice restaurant on the ground floor of the busy, trendy, shopping centre. Very good Americano (using Illy beans I think).

Salamanca, St Andrew Street, Dublin 2
Wonderful Spanish tapas restaurant. Excellent Robt Roberts coffee.

Café Crepe, Nassau Street, Dublin 2
Nice atmosphere, good clientele, lots of interaction between the staff. Illy coffee (latte) was good. Danish (apple) pastry was excellent. Nice place to linger! (Longer review will follow)

Cineworld, Parnell Centre, Dublin
We arrived early in the evening to this cinema complex and the bar/café area was very quiet. The barman produced a very nice cappuccino using Lavazzo coffee: foamy, lots of chocolate - perhaps a bit weak for me but my two companions enthused about it.

Starbucks, Foster Place, Dublin 2
Busy, buzzing, lots of staff, good music (Sting, ok, matter of taste!) and reasonably good coffee. I feel that walking into a Starbucks is like walking into a retailer selling coffee equipment and beans and providing the actual coffee to drink as an afterthought! Too much product on view guys!! (Longer review will follow)

Vote for your favourites!

At the moment I'm accepting emails with votes under the categories below and I'll process the results by hand fairly quickly. When I (or more likely a good friend!) manages to get around to it there'll be an automated and real time poll here.

Your name

Favourite Coffeehouse
Any coffeehouse, anywhere in
the world - it doesn't have to
be in Dublin, or even Ireland,
and it doesn't have to have
been reviewed yet

Favourite Cappuccino
From any coffeehouse, as above

In the forms below just click on your choice and move on to the next category. When you hit the 'Submit' button all the choices will be emailed to me...

Favourite major manufacturer
Don't worry about specifics yet, let's just get the major players sorted out. If there's any missing from the list below email me and I'll add them in - bear in mind this is particularly aimed at the Irish market though

Favourite Coffee Bean
There are so many different coffees out there, here are just some in a list for you to choose. If your favourite isn't here email me the name and I'll add it to the list (and also count your vote)

Favourite Roast and Ground

Instant Coffee
Instant coffee is made by taking the roasted and ground coffee and adding hot water until it forms a highly concentrated liquor. It is then either spray or freeze dried. Spray drying is faster but produces a lower quality product, likely to be powder.

Favourite Instant Granules

Favourite Freeze Dried

Favourite Instant Powder

Decaffeination methods
There are two types of commonly used decaffeination, solvent and water based. Of the two water based decaffeination takes considerably longer but obtains a better end product.

Favourite Decaffeinated

Write a review
There's only so many cups of coffee I can drink (even if the latest research says that it's no harm, and could in fact be beneficial!) so please help me out and review your favourite coffeehouse. Similar reviews to what is already on the site are fine - if you want to go into more depth and include photographs too that's equally acceptable. If you disagree with a review then write your own and it will be posted after the review already appearing, on the same page.
