In the Irish language tradition, the Blessed Virgin Mary had a name of her own – Muire – which set her apart from all others. Her Feast of the Assumption was a big day in Ireland; la Fheile Muire Mor san Fhomhair, coming as it does at harvest time.

The Feast of the Assumption sets Mary apart as unique. The first fruits of a flawed humanity, first to achieve perfection, body and soul in heaven, an example and inspiration for all others to follow.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO STUDY THEOLOGY FROM HOME?

There was a time when most people thought that theology was the business of the priest . Indeed even in Ireland today many believe it has nothing to do with ordinary people.

In the world of the new millennium, theology is being discovered as a very exciting and fascinating topic, and more and more people are taking it up.

And now, we are offering an opportunity for people to study theology from the comfort of their homes. Following the method made famous by the open university, we are assembling ‘packs’, each one dealing with an aspect of theology, and utilising a network of centres around the country where students can have the help of a resident tutor.

This September the course on offer is Foundations of Scripture, introducing participants to the study of the bible. Further information from The Priory Institute, Tallaght Village Dublin 24. Ph 01 - 4048132

HUNGER IN South Africa

This week Trocaire has sent us the following note concerning their work work to alleviate hunger in Southern Africa.

‘In Malawi we are helping to distribute maize and seeds for the next harvest to 78,000

people, and we are also working through the Medical Missionaries of Mary who are distributing food and seeds to 1400 families.

In Zimbabwe, we are reaching vulnerable people particular children under the ages of 13 years, pregnant women, the elderly and the destitute. Trocaire is distributing food and seed to 189,000 people in Zambia while we are aslo supporting relief activities in Angola’.

CAR PARKING ON PARISH GROUNDS

The area outside the walled area of the Church, which is the property of the parish – has become a popular parking area for day commuters. Increasingly the main gates of the church have been blocked (despite Notices to the contrary). The two pedestrian gates are also being blocked so that people needing wheelchair access or people with prams cannot get to the Church.

Further people who use the Parish Hall and Parish Office can no longer find the parking they are entitled to.

For these – and other – reasons, consideration will have to be given to limiting access to this area.
