    MASS CARDS AND MASS OFFERINGS

The Church approves of the practice of Masses being offered for the intentions of the living and also the dead. Those who ask for a Mass to be offered for a particular intention can be drawn more closely into the celebration of the Eucharist. The Mass Offering is also a contribution to the upkeep of priests and often assists priests working on the Missions. However there is always a danger of bad practice. For this reason the Church has strict rules to govern the practice and priests are obliged to observe them.

The best option for people are to buy an unsigned Mass Card and have it signed by a priest they know. The priest would either celebrate the Mass himself or pass it on to another priest who would celebrate the Mass for the intention of the donor. The person who has a Mass card signed in this way can be confident that the Mass will be celebrated and the offering will be passed on to the priest who does so. People are entitled to know that the Mass will be celebrated for their intention and that the offering will be passed on to the priest.

The practice of having pre-signed Mass Cards in the name of an unknown priest and then sold in shops is open to abuse. There is no guarantee that the Mass will be celebrated or, if it is celebrated, that the Mass offering will be passed on to the priest who celebrated the Mass. There have in fact being alarming reports recently that a combination of these practices has led to the public scandal of using the Mass as an organised profit-making business, making a mockery of the Christian obligation to pray for the dead and express genuine solidarity with those bereaved.

    SEASON OF LENT

Lent commences Wednesday next. It is a time to check in what direction we are going.

Three signposts are given to us to find the right road or to ensure that we stay on the right road.

    These are PRAYER FASTING ALMSGIVING

These signposts are as ancient as Christianity itself.

    LENT ON OUR PARISH

    1. There is in this Parish a strong participation in daily Mass during Lent. It is hoped that this tradition will continue this year. Starting on Ash Wednesday Masses for Lent will be at 7.45am, 9.30am and 7.30pm.
    2. Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament continues Monday to Friday 8am-8pm.

    TROCAIRE

Since it was set up over 30 years ago support for the Trocaire Lenten Campaign has been part of our celebration of Lent. It is a reminder to people that we are our brother and sister’s keepers. This year Trocaire is concentrating especially on Rwanda. It is now 10 years since the terrible genocide took place with over 1 million murdered over a space of three months. Over the past decade Trocaire and Irish missionaries have been active in Rwanda. Their main focus of support centres on the increasing of food production, provision of adequate water and health facilities, establishing a network of catholic schools (well over 50% of Rwanda is Catholic) and working with the government and its agencies in seeking to heal the wounds – literally seeking to ‘bind up hearts that are broken’. Trocaire has worked in close collaboration with the Irish government and the European Community in channelling support and help to many projects.

Trocaire Boxes have been distributed to all the homes in the Parish. You are invited to contribute weekly and your box will be collected at the end of Lent. If you did not receive a Trocaire Box, kindly contact the Parish Office.

    CONTAINER TO ZAMBIA

A group of people involved in the visit to Zambia now hope to send a container of much needed items to Zambia. Details of items are posted in front porch of Church.

Details from 087 6542951 (evenings). The collection point is the Old Albatross depot on the Kells-Clonmellon Rd (3 miles from Kells) every Saturday 10am-1pm starting Sat Feb 28. Proposed departure date mid April.

    TROCAIRE

In Rwanda, 800,000 people died from April to July 1994. Rwanda is one-third the size of Ireland and is known as the land of a thousand hills. Sadly these hills now hold the mass graves of fathers, mothers, sisters and brothers. Trocaire has worked in Rwanda since 1994 and is working on many projects including the provision of counselling to the survivors to help cope with the trauma of the genocide. (More on Rwanda next week)

Remember your weekly contribution to your Trocaire Box.
