SEASON LENT
Lent commences next Wedns. It is a time to check in what direction we are pointing in life. Three signposts are given to us to find the right road or to ensure that we stay on the right road. These are:
PRAYER
FASTING
ALMSGIVING
These signposts are as ancient as Christianity itself.
LENT IN OUR PARISH
1.There is in this Parish a strong tradition of participation in daily Mass during Lent. It is hoped that this tradition will continue this year. Starting Ash Wednesday Masses for Lent will be 7.45am, 9.30am and 7.30 p.m. Monday to Friday. Girley weekly Mass will be on Friday at 7.30.
2. Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament continues Monday to Friday 8am-8pm.
3. Fasting is especially encouraged on the Fridays of Lent.
4. Daily support of the Trocaire Box is encouraged.
ASH Wednesday
Masses 7.45, 9.30 and 7.30pm. Girley 7.30pm.

MEETING OF PASTORAL COUNCIL
The next meeting will take place on Monday 11 Feb at 8pm in Parochial House. The main task of this meeting will be to establish the priorities for our Parish at this time
TROCAIRE BOXES
This Lent, Trocaire is highlighting the obscenity of child exploitation and child labour.
Your help is needed.
Sadly the lives of millions of children especially those in poorer countries are absolutely hell. Children in poverty are often weak and vulnerable. Many governments, armies, corrupt war lords, ruthless businessmen and corporations see children, not as a treasure to be nourished, but as a commodity to be exploited.
Each home should receive a Trocaire Box soon. Any home that does not receive a Box is asked to contact the Parish Office.
We appeal to you to deposit EURO only in the Box. At the end of Lent when we count the collection for Trocaire, decimal coins will make it difficult to count and may damage our counting machines which are tuned to EURO only..

Tax Relief for Donations to Parish
Parishioners are advised that a Tax Relief Scheme now exists whereby income tax can be reclaimed on sums of 250 or more donated to the Parish during 2002. In the case of PAYE Taxpayers, the Revenue Commissioners will pay the money directly to the Parish. For example, PAYE Taxpayer, paying Tax at 42%, gives 250 to the parish in 2002. Revenue will refund the Tax associated with the donation to the Parish on grossed up basis i.e. 181.03.
Self-assessed Taxpayers will be able to claim a tax allowance on submission of a certificate from the Parish.
Parishioners wishing to avail of the Tax Relief Scheme should contact the Parish Office or Parochial House.
PRIORITIES IN OUR PARISH
At last weeks meeting of the Parish Pastoral Council, the following areas were seen as priority at present in the Parish:
CONFIRMATION COMMITTMENT CEREMONIES
At the 9.30 and 11oc Masses next Sunday the Confirmation children and their parents will make a public commitment in preparation for the Sacrament.
The front seats in the Church will be reserved for them

TROCAIRE
More than 300,000 children, some as young as seven, are forced to fight with armies and militia in over 30 countries. Trocaire supports organisations in Sierra Leone and Nicaragua, which are working to support children who have been forced to work as child soldiers or who live and work on dumps.
Each house should have received a Trocaire Box. If you did not, kindly contact the Parish Office. Remember: Euro and cents only in your Trocaire Box

CEMETERY DRAW
The vast increases in refuse disposal and insurance has brought our annual maintenance costs to over 20000.
This year we propose to hold just one Cemetery Draw on Thurs April 25.
Since most of our cards in previous Draws were fully paid up from the start, the new arrangement should suit both promoters and subscribers. Prizes will be increased fivefold six prizes of 200, eight prizes of 100, six prizes of 50 and four promoters prizes of 50. Total 2500 (£1968). Subscription for the Draw will be 15 (fifteen euro).
Cemeteries are increasingly expensive to maintain and develop and we will be grateful for your co-operation with the Promoters. Cards are available at the Parish Office.
Come and join us for Womens World Day of Prayer Friday March 1 in St. Columbas Church at 8pm. All welcome.

Trocaire
Trocaire desperately needs the support of the Irish public this Lent if we are to support children world-wide who have been exploited, brutalised and enslaved (Justin Kilcullen, Trocaire). Trocaire has called on the Government to ratify the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court which would ensure that those who used children in armed conflict could be brought to justice under a fair and independent court of law.
Remember your weekly support to Trocaire. (EURO currency only please)
